Dear Why Team member,
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
How fortunate are we to be able to wake up and say that, wish that, to anyone we come in contact with for the next few days?
What a Year 2022 has been!
However you may categorize it, good, bad, normal - living today gives you the opportunity to improve and grow. If you had not had the chance or the energy to make last year your best year yet, you are given another chance in this New Year.
Are you a believer that 2023 will be your Best Year Ever?
And if not, why not?
My friend and climbing guide Matt Walker once told me, regarding his guidance and the equipment we use to climb a rock face:
“No faith, No progress”.
Do you have faith you can become more in 2023?
Many today no longer set New Year’s resolutions because as I often hear from my audiences, they don’t work. In other words, they have set them, but nothing changed, at least for not very long.
Lost faith is an epidemic.
How might we restore more faith in ourselves in this New Year?
To begin, set only one resolution per calendar quarter. Too many resolutions can overwhelm us to the point of not doing any. Just set one in the first quarter and write out the specific actions necessary for its accomplishment putting the steps into your calendar.
When my 20 year old daughter saw my 2023 calendar on New Year’s Day she was visibly overwhelmed - so much already locked and loaded.
I shared with her that all I have to do tomorrow is what I set out to do for that specific day and that every other bridge cannot be crossed until I come to it. I even shared with her an insight from Abraham Lincoln who said the best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time.
What steps have you placed within your days to move you toward the summits you wish to reach?
Recently, I heard some advice from Jocko Willink who said forget motivation, focus more on self-discipline and consistency.
Motivation requires the energy of thought - why not direct that energy to action.
Don’t think, DO!!
I’m not suggesting you don’t have a plan, think in advance - write out what you want to do each and every day and when the day arrives just do it.
Additional thought can only get in the way - when the time arrives,
no more thought, just action.
Disciplined actions retrain the mind to more powerfully productive thoughts. After years of depending on thought to act in the moment, turn the tables and just DO out of Self-Discipline.
Discipline’s root is disciple, to teach. Disciplined action teaches and molds us - and is a model for others to follow.
For 2023 to be your Best Year Ever, decide in advance what you will do and when you come to that new bridge on that new day - don’t think, just cross it!
Hitting the marks that you laid out in advance is your only responsibility - not hitting them is not an option.
Here’s an accountability idea:
Commit to a friend what you will do and promise that if you don’t do what you committed to do you will send $500 to your least favorite politician :-).
Or commit to something else that you deem worse than not doing what you promised yourself and your friend you would do. And if you’re not willing to go this far, then why not? Could it be the desire to keep a back door open?
Cortes, Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great burned their ships to eliminate the option of failure.
How might you burn the ships that you have used to escape your commitment?
This year, more than ever before, PLAN IT, COMMIT TO IT, OWN IT and DO IT!!
The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. Do not be overwhelmed by the thousand miles, focus more fully on that new step each and every day. Rejoice in the accomplishment of those steps alone and at the end of 2023, you will look back and marvel at how far you have come.
Tolstoy said the only place we have any power is NOW - so use that power to ACT NOW!! Don’t think - DO!!
2023 WILL BE OUR BEST YEAR EVER because we will take more empowering steps each and every BEST DAY EVER!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
